Hiking the Canyon

The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and hiking the canyon is a wonderful way to experience the sheer majesty and beauty of this natural wonder.

Canyon Day Hikes

Individuals do not need a permit and are entirely on their own. Hiking trails range from easy strolls on paved paths along the rim of the Canyon (the Rim Trail offers a leisurely nature walk) to grueling climbs to the Colorado River, 5,000 feet below the Canyon rim. Ffor the ambitious hiker, Bright Angel Trail heads north to the Colorado River then turns east along the river to Phantom Ranch.

Many people hike a short distance below the rim - the Grand Canyon's inner canyon. Your descent, however brief, marks your entry into a world in which preparation, self-reliance, and common sense are crucial. This is a place of extremes and hiking below the rim requires careful planning. Extreme heat and terrain make for difficult hiking conditions.

Safety, Suggested Hikes & Trail Maps

Hiking in Grand Canyon can be fun if you are prepared and hike intelligently! Keep in mind that you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of your companions. Planning and preparation are key, so for safety information, tips, descriptions of suggested day hikes and trail maps, we recommend you visit the Grand Canyon National Park website for suggested hikes and tips.

Also, for first-hand tips and personal insights from experienced Grand Canyon National Park backcountry ranger and field instructor for the Grand Canyon Field Institute, Denise Traver, be sure to visit Hit the Trail!
