Choose a tour that fits your schedule and interests. There are several different options. Take the time to learn some of the captivating history and geology of this timeless location.

Grand Canyon Railway

Step back in history and ride a vintage train between Williams, Arizona and the Grand Canyon! The Railway Express Tour is a morning departure from the Grand Canyon. The tour begins with a sixty minute van ride to the Williams Train Depot where you will start your day off watching an Arizona gunfight. You will then board the train for a trip back to the canyon, complete with strolling musicians and cowboys to entertain you. This tour is for the “train enthusiast”, please note the train ride does not offer views of the canyon.

Mule Rides

For the more adventuresome visitor, looking to create a true lifetime memory, why not take a mule ride down into the Grand Canyon or perhaps along the rim! We offer two guided rides using a time honored method of canyon transportation: the sure footed mule.

Guests with reservations must check-in before their mule ride with the Bright Angel Activities Desk.

Guests without reservations may inquire about availability at the Bright Angel Activities Desk.
For more information and Rider qualifications, please go here.

Standby Waiting List for Mule Rides

Because of the popularity of the rides, many times they are sold out. Visitors arriving at the Grand Canyon without reservations for the mule ride can place their name on a waiting list for cancellations for the Canyon Vista Mule Ride. Names are taken only one day in advance. Guests may inquire about availability on the Havasupai Gardens mule ride for next-day reservations, but a waitlist will not be taken.

Xanterra's Sustainability Commitment

Xanterra South Rim, L.L.C. and Xanterra Travel Collection® have a long, storied history of sound environmental stewardship that dates back to Fred Harvey days. That’s why our mission statement is “Legendary Hospitality with a softer footprint ™”. We’ve been doing this for over a hundred years but we’re still finding new ways, every day, to exceed guest expectations while minimizing our environmental impacts.

To read more about Xanterra’s environmental work, check out our latest Sustainability report here to see a full electronic version of the Xanterra Corporate Responsibility Report. There are also two videos on this web page showcasing some of our programs locally and corporate-wide.

Sustainable Elements of Your Room

Bath and Shower Amenities

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion are dispensed in larger, more secure containers. By providing amenities in bulk rather than in traditional, disposable containers we are drastically reducing solid waste generation. Even better, these new containers are filled with high quality products available for purchase in Xanterra gift shops if you would like to take some home with you.

Lighting, Furniture, Carpet, Design and Beyond

The lighting throughout your room is produced by highly efficient sources using LED light bulbs. The rooms also use the natural light from windows to light the space during the day. Recycled and repurposed components of the room are also an important sustainable component in your room. Some furniture items in your room may have been made from local, reclaimed or repurposed materials. We strive to use local designs, materials and products in our guest rooms as much as possible. There are also many other elements of your room that you might not notice (HVAC controls and equipment, improved insulation, low- or zero-VOC paint, Green Seal certified cleaning products) that make Xanterra’s guest rooms among the most sustainable in the entire hospitality industry. Every physical element, design decision, operating process and plan for the eventual reuse or disposal is made to deliver a superior product with a minimal environmental impact.

Recycling Bins

Please use the blue recycling bin in your room to recycle #1 plastic bottles and aluminum cans. We’ll also be happy to take old personal batteries (at any Xanterra gift shop). Check out the recycling QR code for more information on the environmental impacts of our recycling program. Any way that you can help to reduce what ends up in the trash by reducing, reusing and recycling is a huge help to the Grand Canyon!

How We Are Making a Difference

Why Is Water Conservation So Important

The short answer is ‘because it’s so scarce’. The long answer is ‘because it is so hard to get the water to the South Rim’. Both are true and in fact, there are even more reasons than those to conserve water. The South Rim’s water comes across the Grand Canyon from Roaring Springs on the North Rim in the Trans-canyon Pipeline. Thanks to gravity, it flows to Indian Garden on its own. From there, it has to be pumped 3,000 vertical feet up to the South Rim. Moving water uphill takes a tremendous amount of energy so every bit of water you conserve saves a huge amount of electricity. In fact, 40% of all electricity consumption at the South Rim is just for the water pumps at Indian Gardens. Another way to think about it – every gallon of water pumped to the South Rim uses the same amount of electricity that would power a compact fluorescent light bulb for an hour and twelve minutes. In cooperation with the plastic water bottle ban in the Park we have refilling stations for water throughout our many locations. Our natural spring water is some of the best around and suitable for drinking. Pick up a re-useable bottle at one of our stores and have as much as you’d like – it’s free! Absolutely anything you can do to save water helps the Grand Canyon.

Fire Safety & Emergencies

Please familiarize yourself with the locations of hallway fire exits, alarms and extinguishers. In the unlikely event of a fire, call 911 and follow these basic procedures until otherwise directed by the hotel staff or fire department.

Smoking is not permitted in your room. Please do not smoke, use open flames, camping stoves, candles, incense, or cook in your room at any time. Use of these items will trigger a building-wide alarm. Smoking in your room will result in additional room charges.

Emergencies: Dial 911

If You Have Just Arrived:

  • Learn where the exits are and locate at least two exits.
  • Find alarms and extinguishers; locate the Fire Alarm and Fire extinguishers on your floor.

If You Find a Fire

  • Stay calm and think.
  • Dial 911 and report the fire.
  • Activate the nearest fire alarm.
  • Close doors against the fire. If possible close the doors around the fire area.
  • Before you exit be sure to take your room key.
  • Do not use a fire extinguisher unless you can do so safely.

If You Hear an Alarm from Your Room

  • Take only your room key.
  • Test doors for heat BEFORE you open them, with your hand to see if the door is hot or cool.
  • If the door is cool, slowly open the door, looking out for smoke. Shut the door and do not exit if there is thick smoke outside. Place a wet towel at the bottom of the door.
  • Exit if there is no smoke, find the nearest exit and stay close to a wall as you leave the building.
  • Touch test the exit door for heat before opening it. If it is cool exit with caution, if it is hot try another exit or return to your room.
  • If your exit is clear, leave the building immediately through the nearest exit. Close all doors behind you as you leave. The fire department will be arriving shortly. You will be given instructions by the hotel staff on when it is safe to return.
  • Please do not return to the building until you are told it is safe to do so.

If You Cannot Leave Your Room

  • Stay there, your room is the safest place to be.
  • Wet towels, sheets or blankets can keep smoke from entering through the crack under your door.
  • Stuff air vents with wet cloth.
  • Keep plenty of water in the tub, and have wastebaskets or ice buckets for carrying water to wet the towels, sheets or blankets that are keeping smoke out.
